A Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the alleged irregularities in the Real Estate Regulation and Development Act (RERA) involving 65 builders from the Kalyan-Dombivali area of the Thane district.

According to Ashok Morale, Additional Commissioner (Crime), Thane, 65 developers have been arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for fabricating permissions for RERA registration and cheating the local civic bodies in the process. The cases are registered at Manpada and Ramnagar police stations in Dombivali.

Further, Morale explained, "The Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has filed a complaint against 27 builders and developers, and an FIR has been filed at Manpada police station against 27 developers, and a case has been filed at Ram Nagar police station against 38 developers".

He also said that the cases at Manpada and Ram Nagar police stations would be transferred to the SIT if required.

According to Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA), 52 projects from Kalyan - Dombivali were put under notice on Monday.

In response to the communication we received from the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation about the projects, we have suspended them and issued a show cause notice to the developers. As per the procedure, we will provide them with an opportunity to explain and then take appropriate action," said Dr. Vasant Prabhu, Secretary, MahaRERA.

According to reports, there are some irregularities in the projects and their registration documents with MahaRERA.

In essence, the accused allegedly forged documents to show that permissions for house construction were issued by the KDMC and then obtained MahaRERA registration based on those documents. During the period 2017-2022, the developers committed fraud.
